What Are Safety Glasses and Should I Wear Them?

Injuries in the Workplace Can Be Common

Our eyes are precious, and although sight-threatening injuries in the workplace can be common, they’re often easily avoidable. Just as certain occupations require you to use a helmet to protect your head, we should be taking the same precaution with safety glasses to protect our eyes.

Safety glasses differ from standard glasses in that they provide more impact-resistance to stand the force of an object that would otherwise cause trauma to the eye. Eyewear meeting standard impact-resistant criteria can be made with your normal glasses prescription, or without any prescription (known commonly as “plano” lenses) if you do not require correction. Safety glasses can be made to correct refractive error conditions such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and even presbyopia (requiring progressive lenses or bifocals) so you should never have to compromise your vision.

Sometimes, in conditions like strabismus or amblyopia (commonly referred to as “lazy eye”), your Optometrist may recommend impact-resistant lenses in your everyday glasses prescription. The reason for this is to provide additional protection to your eyes, especially for the one with better vision or visual potential. This is because if damage occurs to the better seeing eye, the eye that is already weak would leave that person with extra poor vision.

We understand the importance of protecting your eyes and carry a wide range of options when it comes to safety eyewear to suit your individual requirements.
