Photobiomodulation
In recent years, there has been an abundance of interest around red light therapy (also known as “photobiomodulation”) for the improvements it can offer to various aspects of human health. Because of this, many patients have asked whether it can play a role in improving their eye health. So far, the majority of interest around beneficial red light therapy have been focused in the areas of skin health (promotion of collagen production, reducing wrinkles and scarring), wound healing (enhancing tissue repair and reducing inflammation), pain relief (muscle, joints, etc), regulation of mood and sleep (via melatonin production) and cellular metabolism (enhancing mitochondrial function). With this scientific foundation, recent investigations have been under way to see whether these known benefits can be applied to ocular wellness and overall eye health.
In contrast to short-wavelength blue light (closer to UV light on the spectrum), the red spectrum of light possesses a longer-wavelength (approximately 670nm) and has shown promise in improving eye conditions involving cellular inflammation, oxidative stress and/or reduced blood flow to ocular tissue.
Scientific studies suggest that photobiomodulation may help with conditions like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Dry Eye Disease, Myopia Control and Glaucoma, although currently there is not enough overall evidence to arrive at a consensus on standardized clinical integration. As studies continue to emerge in regards to photobiomodulation in eye care, it is important to always consult your eye care provider regarding safe dosages and using this type of treatment is right for you.
At Inspired Eyes Optometry, we carry a product called the ArunaLight, which utilizes red and near-infrared light to improve blood flow and cellular energy within the eye. ArunaLight is approved by Health Canada to improve blood flow to the eyes. It is therefore a safe , non-invasive option for patients interested in deriving the benefits of photobiomodulation in the comfort of their own home. The unit is designed to deliver what has been determined to be the optimal “dose” of red light (3 minutes every other day), which is based on current research to date. We do not advise our patients to use ArunaLight more than the recommended amount
Unlike sunlight, red and near-infrared light therapy (typically at or close to 670 nm) is generally safe and does not contain harmful UV radiation that can cause skin aging, sunburn, and even cancer. With that said patients who experience a high level of photophobia (light sensitivity) or who are taking medications that can cause light sensitivity are not advised to use red light photobiomodulation. It is important to ask your eye doctor if this type of therapy is a good option for you.
