What Are Eye Floaters and How Do I Get Rid of Them?

Eye floaters are tiny specks or strands that drift through your field of vision. They are caused by changes in the vitreous gel inside your eye as it ages. The gel can become more liquid and form scattered clumps of collagen fibers, casting shadows on the retina, which you perceive as floaters.

Some of the common causes of eye floaters are aging (the vitreous gel naturally shrinks and its composition changes), nearsightedness (more common the higher your prescription is), having a previous eye injury or having an inflammatory condition within the eye (ex: uveitis).

When discussing eye floaters, it is important to include that if you suddenly notice a significant increase in floaters, especially if they are accompanied by flashes of light or peripheral vision loss, you should get your eyes checked immediately. If you are unable to see your Optometrist immediately, you should go to the nearest emergency room to ensure that a retinal detachment or another serious sight-threatening condition is not occurring.

Even for a new, single floater, it is important to see your Optometrist routinely to ensure there are no small holes or tears in your retina. They will likely dilate your eyes to check for this. At Inspired Eyes Optometry, we also include Ultra-Wide Field Retinal Imaging with the Optos Monaco, which can capture many issues associated with eye floaters. However, as the vast majority of floaters that occur gradually or last a long time are simply annoying, many wonder what they can do to reduce or eliminate them.

While there’s no guaranteed way to eliminate floaters, a new option has recently emerged in the form of a nutraceutical supplement. VitreousHealth is a collection of antioxidant and antiglycation nutrients: L-lysine, Vitamin C, Zinc and several polyphenols (plant-based antioxidants).

This specific VitreousHealth formula was based on a 2021 randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial that was published in the journal “Translational Vision Science & Technology”. The 61 patient study showed a statistically significant improvement in the size of floaters as well as symptoms associated with floaters in the group that took the supplement for 6 months, compared to the placebo group.

At Inspired Eyes Optometry (after examining your eyes with a Vision Wellness Assessment to ensure your eyes are healthy) we recommend our Vitreous Health nutritional supplement for patients experiencing bothersome floaters.
